Marblehead Municipal Light Department (MMLD) is a public electric utility serving the community of Marblehead, Massachusetts since 1894. MMLD's mission is to provide reliable, low-carbon power while maintaining competitive rates for its customers and a safe, productive working environment for its employees. Serving its 10,300+ electric customers through a system supplied by dedicated twin 23kV transmission lines, four substations, and a 4kV distribution network. MMLD has approximately 20 full-time employees and is governed by a local, independent board of five commissioners.
General Summary
Under the direction of the Manager of Distribution, Working Foreman and/or Lead Lineworker, perform duties associated with the construction, operation, maintenance, and restoration of MMLD's electric distribution system in a safe and efficient manner.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform line construction, maintenance and troubleshooting duties under the direct supervision of qualified line personnel.
- Participate in a formal lineworker apprenticeship program and complete required classroom, safety and on-the-job training.
- Assist in the installation and maintenance of overhead and underground distribution facilities, including poles, transformers, conductors, services and related equipment.
- Operate tools, equipment and vehicles only as authorized and trained.
- Respond to emergencies, outages and storm restoration activities, including after-hours callouts.
- Maintain required records and demonstrate proficiency in applicable safety practices and work methods.
Preparation, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- High school diploma or equivalent; trade school or utility lineworker training preferred.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Ability to perform strenuous outdoor work, including at heights of over 30 feet, and successfully complete apprenticeship milestones.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn electric utility safety rules, including OSHA and applicable industry standards.
Working Conditions and Physical Demands
- Regular work outdoors in all weather conditions and during emergency response situations.
- Frequent walking, standing, climbing, lifting and physically demanding work, including aloft via aerial bucket or climbing harness.
- Regular exposure to electric voltages up to 23kV and utility construction hazards.
- Ability to lift and move materials and equipment weighing 50–80 pounds and more with assistance.
- Participation in an on-call rotation and availability for overtime and emergency assignments.
