Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, Inc. (FIEC) is seeking a reliable, self-motivated Apprentice Lineworker/Groundman or Second Class Lineworker to join its team. Qualified candidates must reside on or be willing to relocate to North Haven or Vinalhaven Island. This position is part of a 4-member line crew charged with maintaining and improving nearly 190 miles of distribution/transmission lines, operating and maintaining FIEC’s substation and generation assets, and assuring exemplary member service and reliability for FIEC’s 1,500 members. This position is an entry-level position for either (1) a 4-year training track to journeyman lineworker or (2) a trained journeyman second-class lineworker with 0-4 years of experience.

Job Description

  • Under the general direction of the Line Supervisor or a First Class Lineworker, the successful applicant, within their current realm of experience and knowledge, will be responsible for building, maintaining, and repairing overhead and underground power lines in a safe and effective manner within the established guidelines of industry work practices.
  • Knowledge of the RUS construction specifications and the National Electrical Safety Code is a plus.
  • Applicants must also be able to work in adverse weather conditions for long hours to support emergencies, storm restoration, and other activities.
  • Experience working on energized conductors and equipment at 12.5kV is preferred but not required.
  • Courtesy in dealing with members, co-workers, and others, adaptability and willingness to acquire new skills, professional attitude and interest in work, and attention to general work rules and safety procedures are essential characteristics of the ideal candidate.
  • Excellent attendance and reporting to work on a scheduled basis as determined by the Line Supervisor.

Job Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Apprenticeship training in a DOL certified program selected and paid for by FIEC (4-year course).
  • Basic aptitudes in numerical ability, numerical reasoning, and spatial awareness.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s license (required within six months of employment).
  • DOT medical certificate.

Physical Requirements

The Apprentice Lineworker/Groundman position is physically demanding. Applicants must be:

  • Capable of performing job functions for extended periods in adverse conditions.
  • Able to manually lift and move objects weighing 100 pounds.
  • Able to climb and work poles, ladders, and other structures.
  • Able to work from elevated bucket trucks and lifts.

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary of $17.00-$24.00/hour based on experience with annual cost of living adjustments and step increases for training completion.
