Description
GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under general supervision of the Working Foreman Lineman and Electric Supervisor, perform skilled line work in connection with the construction, maintenance and repair of underground and overhead primary and secondary lines, mains, conduits, poles and related apparatus.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS*:
In conformance with Department policy and applicable safety rules and regulations, erect poles, run and sag line wire and cable, splice cables, and connect single and three-phase transformer banks. Install conductors and related apparatus. Review and interpret Department maps and records as necessary.
Assist in training apprentice lineman and ensure that personnel are properly and safely positioned to perform repair and installation functions.
Maintain and repair/replace street lighting and supporting structures. Respond to public inquiries, requests and complaints related to line activities within authority and refer unresolved issues to the Electric Supervisor or Working Foreman Lineman.
Work with energized systems up to 13.8KV using rubber gloves.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Operate and work from derrick, bucket trucks and ladder.
Ensure that vehicles are properly stocked and maintained.
Accept stand-by call on rotating basis to respond to emergency repair calls and for other Department emergencies. May assist other municipalities during emergency situations.
Perform other duties as assigned.
BASIC KNOWLEDGE & EXPERIENCE:
Duties require knowledge equivalent to completion of four years of high school and journeyman ability in electrical trade. Must possess a valid Massachusetts Class B License and Hoisting License. Work requires up to five years of progressively responsible related experience.
INDEPENDENT ACTION:
Under general supervision, perform lineman duties in conformance with Department policies and procedures. Refer to Working Foreman Lineman for work assignments and certain equipment replacement decisions. Report pole accidents, blown fuses and transformers and any power interruptions.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
Assist in training apprentice lineman.
WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
All work performed in accordance with departmental and regulatory safety standards.
Work outdoors in all kinds of weather and at all times of the day or night
Must be able to operate derrick, and bucket truck
Must be able to lift, carry, and handle an extension ladder
Must not be afraid of heights (up to 50 ft. above ground)
Perform other duties as assigned
Work performed on energized and de-energized power lines
Work and travel in inclement weather
