Princeton Municipal Light Department is seeking candidates for the position of Groundman/Apprentice. This is a union position with a pay range of $27.85 to $30.65 per hour.
This is a hands-on role that provides a pathway to a career as a skilled Lineworker.

Reports To: General Foreman
Job Purpose:
To learn as a condition of employment, PMLD’s electric utility distribution system and general plant.
To apply this learned knowledge and skill to the activities of daily work performance.
To progress in the distribution department through experience and related instruction to become a qualified and skilled 2nd year Apprentice.
Duties:
- Learn PMLD’s electrical distribution system.
- Learn how to climb poles and operate hydraulic aerial line equipment lower controls under direct supervision of crew leader or General Foreman.
- Assist line crews from the ground in all areas of work on live line (energized) and non-energized power line construction. Energized work will be in a team environment with a 1st Class Lineworker or higher.
- Learn and apply advanced skills of electricity, safety, first aid, CPR, AED, and driving safely. Attends training sessions regarding safety, line construction, vehicle operation, meter testing and other related topics.
- Learn stock inventory and its relation to PMLD’s electrical distribution system.
- Become proficient with all hand tools and line equipment.
- Able to operate all department vehicles and equipment safety/ rescue controls.
- Communicates with customers about electric service problems, tree trimming and other related duties.
- Cleans and maintains safety in the shop area.
- Learn the skills and basic fundamentals of distribution line work.
- Assist with maintaining interdepartmental relations with other Town departments and local Municipal Light Departments regarding electrical issues.
- Learn to assess trouble calls and implement corrective measures under guidance of 1st Class Lineworker or higher.
- Respond and report to emergency call-ins if needed.
- Assists with snow removal operations at all PMLD properties.
- Work extended hours during emergency utility conditions.
- Performs other related duties as directed by the 1st Class Lineworker or higher, or General Foreman.

Physical Demands:
Lifting 100 lb. maximum with frequent lifting and or carrying of materials and equipment. Climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, talking, hearing, seeing, and handling are examples of physical demands. This, like any construction job, is physically and mentally demanding work. Constant awareness to safe work practices is imperative to your safety and the safety of the work team. This job is performed and considered an “outside work environment” year-round.
Basic Knowledge:
Computer knowledge, related to hardware, software and printer operations. Must possess the language skill necessary to understand instructions and to convey information both verbally and in written format. Must have the communication skills necessary to communicate with the public in a competitive environment. This position requires math skills and the practical application of fractions, percentages, ratio and proportions, and construction geometric designs.
Experience:
Electrical and/or construction experience desirable, but not necessary.
Requirements:
High School diploma or GED. Successfully enroll in a lineworkers year 1 training program. Obtain a Class B CDL driver’s license within 6 months of hire. This is considered a physical working position within the line department with extensive responsibility and trust. There must be a strong commitment and desire by the individual to meet the daily challenges of this rigorous and sometime hazardous position.
