Description

Line worker 1st Class designates an employee working under the supervision of general foreman principally in connection with the operation, maintenance, construction, or restoration of MMLD overhead and underground distribution system. This position requires proficient three-phase primary and secondary skills at all voltage levels on all MMLD equipment. This position requires 4.5-5.5 years' offline work experience in MMLD approved apprentice training program in both the field and classroom with the goal of being a ticketed journeyman line worker.

Salary: $49.26/hr.

Illustrative Work Activities: Essential work activities, pursuant to the Americans with Disabilities Act, may
include the following:
• Perform all overhead operation, constrt1ction and maintenance on the distribution system including pole setting, conductor installations, transformer and switching equipment connection, and other work associated with energized overhead construction. Successful candidate must be capable of de-energized and grounded construction and maintenance work up to 23 kV, and rubber-gloving energized
three-phase conductors up to 15 kV while wearing all appropriate and required personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Perform all underground construction and maintenance on the distribution system including conduit installation, cable splicing, conductor, transformer and switching equipment installation and connections.
• Perform construction maintenance and operations work on energized MMLD facilities during routine and emergency conditions. This includes progression to all 3 phase energized conductors and equipment at all voltage levels up to 15 kV both overhead and underground distribution system.
• Capable of analyzing and correcting system fault conditions or unsafe conditions as necessary for the proper operation of the system or restoration of service.
• Implement the use of appropriate safety procedures and equipment used in working on energized equipment.
• Perform all required operational safety inspections of tools, vehicles, and equipment assigned to the employee.

• Perform required operational and safety inspection of tools, vehicles, and equipment assigned to the crew.
• Educate subordinate crew members in the use of equipment and appropriate safety procedures to drive and operate all Line department vehicles, trailers, aerial lifts, derricks, trailers and associated hydraulic tools and equipment.
• Educate subordinate crew members in the techniques, materials, and tools used in the construction and maintenance of the distribution system. Begin to present job briefings under the supervision of the lead line worker.
• Respond to call outs during off hours for pole strikes, trouble calls, storm restoration, or other related system emergencies and events.
• Demonstrate the knowledge and understanding of the MMLD GIS system, smart grid automation technology, roadmap and their operational procedures.
• Demonstrate understanding of MMLD vegetation policy.
• Understand MMLD's digital work order system (SOS) and utilize mobile service work order system to increase operational efficiency and productivity.
• Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of MMLD policies and operating procedures.
• Other related assigned duties.

Minimum Qualifications
Education: High school diploma, trade school equivalent or GED (General Education Development). Specialized course(s) in the electrical field preferred.

Experience: At least 4.5 years' active experience as an apprentice line worker. This includes practical
experience as well as classroom in an MMLD approved training program.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Demonstrated pole climbing ability. Demonstrate ability to read and
interpret plans and diagrams used in overhead and underground distribution construction and
maintenance. Demonstrated familiarity with distribution construction materials and equipment. Demonstrated knowledge of overhead and underground construction, maintenance and restoration techniques . Demonstrated familiarity with the service area relative to street and Department facilities. Basic personal computer operations and software applications such as Microsoft Office.

Judgment and Initiative: Capable of using specialized procedures requiring some independent decision on work methods. Works in accordance. with written or verbal instructions and schedules. Must be safety conscious and capable of analyzing consequences of work actions.

Manual Skills: Good hand/eye coordination with good manipulative ability applied to the use of tools,
equipment, and materials common in the construction of distribution systems. Ability to perform while
wearing all appropriate PPE.

Physical Requirements: Moderately heavy physical work indoors and outdoors in any weather at times for an extended period of time. Work may involve lifting, moving, pulling, or pushing bulky materials, equipment and tools used in distribution construction, maintenance and restoration. Demonstrated ability to climb poles and structures with appropriate PPE.

Supervisory: Capable of providing advice, instruction, and job direction to junior line employees.

Licenses and Certifications: Valid Massachusetts CDL A driver's license and hoisting (HE-lB) license,
active CPR and first aid certification, active enclosed and confined space training, active pole top and bucket rescue training and red tag training.
