Position Title:        Part Time Technical & Safety Trainer

Reports to:            Director of Technical Training, Director of Education & Programs

General Summary

The Northeast Public Power Association (NEPPA) has been entrusted by its members to provide the technical and safety training required to safely work on, near, and around energized electric distribution systems.  To better serve our members, NEPPA is seeking to hire additional part-time trainers to support these initiatives.

Trainers regularly travel to our members’ headquarters to deliver training.  Training may also be conducted on-site at NEPPA’s Training Center in Littleton, MA.

Essential Job Functions

The Technical and Safety Trainer is expected to:

• Teach adult students effectively on safety and technical topics in accordance with NEPPA’s curriculum.
• Hold class sessions as scheduled.
• Provide clearly organized and understandable instruction with a focus on achieving tangible learning objectives.
• Instruct students in policies, procedures and best-practices necessary for compliance with federal and state regulations.
• Maintain a professional and positive environment with students and members, both in and out of the classroom.
• Assist in the continual evaluation, development and enhancement of curricula
• Submit accurate and complete records and reports in a timely manner, which is critical in providing assessment data for institutional improvement.
• Participate in professional development and continuing education opportunities, including conferences and workshops, that contribute to professional and institutional advancement.
• Maintain professional certifications, designations and credentials.

Experience, Education & Certifications

• Experience in training, teaching, or facilitating professional development with adults.
• Bachelor’s Degree in related field (electrical or mechanical engineering, power systems, occupational safety and health, etc.).
  • In lieu of a degree, 6+ years’ experience working in, or consulting with an electric utility may be considered.
• Hold a Hoisting and CDL B License, or ability to obtain one within 18 months of employment.
• Preferred: 5+ years’ experience as it relates to OSHA Standards & Safety Compliance, Utility Operations, and/or Engineering.
• Preferred: Authorized OSHA Outreach Trainer, General Industry or Construction, or ability to get authorized within 18 months of employment.
  • If not already an Outreach Trainer, must be willing and able to meet the qualifications:
    1. Successfully complete the OSHA Standards course for the desired discipline (Construction OSHA #510, General Industry OSHA #511)
    2. Document 5 years occupational (workplace) safety activities demonstrating knowledge and use of OSHA standards
       1. NOTE: :A college degree in occupational safety and health, a Certified Safety Professional certification (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist certification (CIH) may be substituted for two years of experience

• Successfully complete the OSHA Trainer Course in Occupational Safety and Health Standards for the desired discipline (Construction OSHA #500, General Industry OSHA #501).

• Preferred but not required: Additional Safety or Professional Certifications such as, but not limited to:

• Professional Engineer (PE)
• Certified Safety Professional (CSP)
• Certified Utility Safety Professional (CUSP)
• Safety & Health Specialist (SHS)
• Certified Safety & Health Official (CSHO)

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

• Strong commitment to safe work practices.
• Enthusiasm, creativity and energy in the classroom. Using a teaching style that provides a positive learning experience for students.  Ability to communicate effectively as a teacher.
• Professionalism including strong interpersonal skills and communication.
• Knowledge and ability to teach courses associated with all aspects of electrical power systems and safety.

• Detailed knowledge of regulations and standards that apply to electrical distribution, for example:
  • Occupational Safety & Health Administration (1910.269 & 1926 Subpart V)
  • National Electrical Safety Code (NESC)
  • National Fire Protection Association (NFPA)
  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI)
• Demonstrated ability to facilitate learning and teach a diverse audience.
• Excellent communication skills (verbal, nonverbal and written) and problem-solving skills (identification, analysis and resolution).
• Proficiency with computers, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), presentation equipment, and cloud computing.
• Ability to work in a remote setting, and remain accountable to preparation, delivery and reporting requirements.

Working Conditions & Physical Demands

• Extensive travel throughout the Northeast, including NY may be required. Requires periodic overnight travel to reach training sites.
• Regularly use a computer in a classroom environment, which may require standing for long periods of time.
  • All reasonable efforts will be made to accommodate any physical restrictions.
• Ability to load, unload and set-up training equipment.

• May need to conform to member work environments, within OSHA, NEPPA and APPA acceptable safety rules including personal protective equipment (PPE).
