Fox Islands Electric Cooperative, Inc. (FIEC) is seeking a reliable, self-motivated Wind Technician to join its team. Qualified candidates must reside in or be willing to relocate to Rockland, North Haven, or Vinalhaven Maine. This position is being created to provide the services required for the continuous and optimal operation of the three Fox Islands Wind 1.5 MW wind turbines located on Vinalhaven Island, as well as assist the Fox Islands Wind board and management in the activities necessary for the potential repowering of the turbines in 2028. The scope of this position also includes assisting FIEC’s line crew as a groundman for storm and outage restoration work on the distribution and transmission system. This position is an intermediate-level position for individuals with 2-4 years of experience in the wind energy industry.

Job Description

The Wind Technician is the critical front line to ensure the safe and optimal performance of all wind farm operations, performing maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs (electrical and mechanical) on wind turbines and other associated equipment. The Wind Technician shall:

    • Focus on the safe execution of field-based equipment maintenance, and diagnostics, as well as long-term reliability and profitability;
    • Implement Operation Safety Policy Instructions, conducting fieldwork in compliance with OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) applicable regulations;
    • Attend monthly FIEC and Fox Islands Wind staff and board meetings and deliver operations and maintenance reports;
    • Collaborate with the Fox Islands Wind CEO and Board of Directors to develop and implement operation-focused feedback and solutions for planned and unplanned maintenance, improvement projects, development, and financial performance actions;
    • Support the Fox Islands Wind CEO and Board of Directors for all phases of safety and environmental reporting, financial reporting, and turbine availability;
    • Assist the Fox Islands Wind CEO and Board of Directors in the evaluation, bidding, and possible construction activities involved in turbine repowering;
  • Communicate with GE on turbine operations, maintenance, parts, and other matters; and
  • Present a positive professional representation of Fox Islands Wind in the community.
  • The Wind Technician must understand the mechanics, including both electrical and maintenance of hydraulics, of all wind turbine components, understand infrastructure schematics, and use appropriate diagnostic tools.
  • The successful candidate will interpret fault reports, maintain power generation reports, service logs in the computer database, and monitor turbine performance and SCADA systems.
  • The Wind Technician will manage their own training schedules and meets all training requirements within designated time frames.
  • Perform other job-related duties as assigned.
  • Applicants must also be able to work in adverse weather conditions for long hours to support emergencies, storm restoration, and other activities.

 Job Requirements

 High school diploma or equivalent.

  • Completion of or enrollment in GE’s Renewable Energy Learning Center turbine fundamentals, intermediate, and advanced training (some courses may be paid by FIEC).
  • Basic aptitudes in numerical ability, numerical reasoning, and spatial awareness.
  • Class B Commercial Driver’s license (required within six months of employment).
  • DOT medical certificate.

 Physical Requirements

The Wind Technician position is physically demanding. Applicants must be:

  • Capable of performing job functions for extended periods in adverse conditions.
  • Able to manually lift and move objects weighing 100 pounds.
  • Able to climb ladders, poles, and other structures.
  • Able to work in limited workspaces inside the wind turbines.

Salary and Benefits

  • Starting salary of $22.00-$28.00/hour based on experience with annual cost of living adjustments and step increases for training completion.
