Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training

March 31, 2021 - April 2, 2021


Based on member demand, NEPPA is pleased to be offering a brand-new Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training course being held March 31 – April 2, 2021 at the NEPPA Training Center (200 New Estate Road, Littleton, MA 01460).

Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training is designed for new hires in the electric and telecommunications industries. Participants may elect to attend one-, two-, or all three-days of the program.

Topics covered in this program meet the introductory standards required to enter these industries. Over the course of their employment, participants will require further training for each work duty and responsibility.

NOTE: In addition to the topics covered in this program, each employer is responsible for the site-specific training of any new hire or employee. See Employer Responsibilities below.

Upon successful completion of the Program, students are awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Who Should Attend

Basic Electricity & Mathematics is designed for:

>Any New Hire in Electric or Telecommunications Industries
>New Lineworkers
>New or Existing Telecommunications Technicians
>New Substation or Meter Technicians
>New Operations Personnel
>New Office Personnel (Days 1 & 3)

Testing & Demonstrations

Final Exam (25 Questions)

All participants are required to demonstrate and perform a pole top, bucket and enclosed/confined space rescue.
NOTE: Only individuals qualified to climb will perform a pole top rescue.

Employer Responsibilities

While this program provides awareness and general safety training required for and to begin employment, the employer is still responsible for providing tool, equipment, and site-specific training for each employee.

Employer-specific training includes but is not limited to:

>Site-specific Safety Data Sheets
>Written emergency action plans
>Tool-specific training
>Use of job-specific PPE including harnesses
>Utility-specific bucket trucks and/or rescue equipment, etc.

NOTE: Only qualified employees may work on or with exposed energized lines or parts of equipment.

** Participants are required to complete a portion of their First Aid/CPR/AED training online in advance of the hands-on session.

Course Prerequisites

There is no prerequisite for Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training however only individuals qualified to climb will perform a pole top rescue.

This is a basic, foundational course for NEPPA’s technical training programs.

Registration fees include lunch on Days 1 & 2. If you have any dietary or other restrictions, please note them on your registration.

Cancellations
Cancellations are accepted until Wednesday, March 17, 2021 (or two weeks prior to the start of the class). Substitutions may be made at any time prior to the start of the class.

Instructors

Steve Socoby

Steve Socoby

Safety & Technical Trainer, Authorized OSHA outreach Instructor (Construction), Certified Medic First Aid Trainer for First Aid, CPR, AED

Steve has 36 years of hands-on experience in all facets of operations of public power utilities including: Line Superintendent; supervision of crews, maintenance, new construction, reliability and associated plant & substation responsibilities. He is a recognized expert in safety and OSHA compliance.

In his role of Director of Technical Training, he oversees NEPPA’s lineworker program and teaches utility management and supervision, electronic controls and power-line operation programs.

Recognized as an industry leader and expert Steve has received the Distinguished Service Award from the Northeast Public Power Association and been recognized by the Maine State Legislature for his previous 30 Years of Distinguished Service. Steve attended the University of Maine at Orono.

Dennis Regele

Dennis Regele

Safety & Technical Trainer, Authorized OSHA outreach Instructor (General Industry)

Dennis has been a trainer for the Northeast Public Power Association since November 2018 and travels throughout the Northeast. Dennis has a Bachelor’s of Science in Natural Science for Worcester State College, is married and has 3 sons.

Prior to joining NEPPA, Dennis started his career in the utility industry in 1984 with Massachusetts Electric (now National Grid). He worked his way up from an apprentice lineworker through crew leader and eventually as Line Supervisor and Safety Supervisor. He then moved on to NSTAR (now Eversource) as a Field/Technical Trainer. Dennis also spent time with Asplundh Utility Line construction as a Regional Safety Supervisor/Trainer and has served as an OSHA Outreach Trainer for the past 12 years.

In addition to training for NEPPA, Dennis is also a part -time instructor at Quinsigamond Community College with the Energy Utility Program.

Scott Larsen

Scott Larsen

Safety & Technical Trainer

Scott joined NEPPA in September 2020 and has 32 years of professional experience in the utility industry. Scott retired from his role as the General Line Foreman for Littleton Electric Light and Water Departments in spring 2020.

His significant field experience coupled with his passion for safety has made him an excellent addition to NEPPA’s training team.

Well known for his stellar work with NEPPA’s Lineworkers Rodeo, Scott is also quite familiar with NEPPA Mutual Aid and has participated in Light Up Navajo. In addition, Scott serves as an LELWD Commissioner in Littleton, MA where he resides.
