Position Title: Technical and Safety Trainer (Part Time)

Reports To:     Director of Safety and Training

GENERAL SUMMARY:

The Northeast Public Power Association (NEPPA) has been entrusted by its members to provide the technical and safety training required to safely work on, near, and around energized electric distribution systems.  To better serve our members, NEPPA is seeking to hire a part-time trainer to support these initiatives. Under the direction of the Director of Safety and Training, trainers are responsible for developing and conducting training for utility operations employees. Trainers regularly travel to our members’ headquarters to deliver training.  Training may also be conducted on-site at NEPPA’s Training Center in Littleton, MA.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Designs/assists/contributes/participates in the implementation and conducting of technical programs sponsored by the Association, including but not limited to, apprentice, advanced lineworkers, meter, substation and crew This includes climbing, rescuing, rigging, construction of power lines and transformers, and power line repair.
  • Extensive travel throughout the Northeast (including NY, may be required). Requires periodic overnight travel to reach training sites.
  • Facilitates specialty programs such as hoisting, , which may require the maintenance of state permits or licensing, and oversight of contractors.
  • Prepares reports for technical and safety training meetings and other departmental records and reports.
  • Develops and maintains member relationships with new and existing Assisting members with assessment and evaluation of employees in relation to published standards.
  • Assists with the planning and implementation of the annual RodE&O Engineering & Operations Conference, the annual Apprentice Rodeo and other member events, as
  • Expected to attend periodic all staff meeting as well as trainers'
  • Recommends new approaches, programs, policies, and procedures to affect continual improvement of efficiency of the Association and services
  • Maintains and repairs equipment, as well as logging of materials utilized in training
  • Performs any other tasks which may be assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Experience in training, teaching, or facilitating professional development with adults.
  • Experience in utility operations and knowledge of regulations and standards that apply to electrical distribution.
  • Hoisting and CDL B License, or the ability to obtain one within 18 months of employment.
  • Proficiency with computers, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook), presentation equipment, and cloud computing.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and written to establish positive public relations for the organization, department and/or division, and to interact effectively with a wide variety of people.
  • Strong commitment to safe work practices.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity and energy in the classroom, using a teaching style that provides a positive learning experience for students. Ability to communicate effectively as a teacher to a diverse audience.
  • Professionalism as an ambassador for the NEPPA program reputation.
  • Ability to work independently, and remain accountable to preparation, delivery and reporting requirements.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • Frequent periods in non-office environments, including manufacturing facilities and utility locations, with possible exposure to high noise and vibration levels.
  • Required to conform to member work environment’s safety rules including, but not limited to, wearing proper personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Exposure to high voltage transmission lines and to weather extremes when conducting field training sessions.
  • May require physical exertion, requiring ability to lift, carry and position heavy objects utilizing proper body mechanics and techniques. Ability to stand for long periods of time.
