TITLE: AMI METER TECHNICIAN (I)
DIVISION: CUSTOMER SOLUTIONS & METERING
SALARY: GRADE 10 ($38.41 -$46.47)
LOCATION: VARIED
SHIFT: 7:30 A.M. to 3:30 P.M.
CIVIL SERVICE CLASSIFICATION: LABOR SERVICE

OBJECTIVES: Under the general supervision of the Assistant Manager of Customer Solutions & Metering and the Manager of Customer Solutions & Metering, the AMI Meter Technician (I) installs, inspects, tests, programs, reads, and repairs electric meters and associated instruments and assists in maintaining the Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) Network. The AMI Meter Technician performs all non-hazardous duties of the AMI Meter Technician (II).

DUTIES:
• Under the general supervision of the Assistant Manager of Customer Solutions & Metering and the Manager of Customer Solutions & Metering, the AMI Electric Meter Technician (I) performs inspection, testing,
programming, maintenance, readings, and repair of all types of electric meters.
• Performs various work on single-phase self-contained electric meters and all CT-rated meters.
• Sets up and performs work according to engineering standards, plant policies, and customer requirements;
advises supervisors of unusual problems or situations encountered; maintains records of work completed and customers serviced.
• Tests meters and associated equipment for accuracy, tampering, and integrated devices functionality; operates and maintains test equipment and overhauls and repairs meters.
• Under direct supervision, performs the following duties: installs and removes instrument transformers,
conducts wire verification tests at test switches on CT-rated meters, and interconnects wiring for CT-rated
meters on de-energized circuits.
• Operates AMI meter software and equipment to ensure reading accuracy and communication reliability; makes necessary repairs or corrections in the field and AMI database and troubleshoots AMI system issues; utilizes
computer systems to execute daily duties; updates meters firmware; and programs different meter types for revenue billing.
• Informs contractors on plant policy regarding metering installation; assigns meter locations; performs single­phase and CT-rated meter replacement and resealing work; makes up primary metering units and works with line crew to install high-voltage metering.
• Performs other duties, such as maintaining the building and grounds and other custodial duties, as directed by the supervisor or AMI Meter Foreworker.
• Installs and removes voltage recorders and power monitoring equipment on single-phase installations;
investigates customer complaints, including noise interference, voltage irregularities, high bills, mixed meters, and meter reading errors.
• Reads and interprets electrical drawings and maps.

• Performs meter inspections and verifications for proper functioning and tampering and reports malfunctions to the supervisor.
• Responsible for projecting a positive image for the Peabody Municipal Light Plant.
• Assists in emergencies to investigate downed wires, standby as required, and aid contractors during an emergency restoration.
• Must be available for emergency calls during non-working hours.
• Interfaces with the Finance Division to disconnect and reconnect electric service for nonpayment of bills; picks up and delivers bill payment receipts, mail, and other materials to agents and banks.
• Participates in GIS field collection of data, including but not limited to meter locations, poles, streets, and all
PMLP field assets.
• Performs other duties as required, including, but not limited to, participation in training sessions and other related educational curricula. It is understood that the adoption of newer technologies does not constitute a change to job duties.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

• Technical knowledge of metering and meter-related work practices, tools, and equipment preferred.
• Ability to apply the principles of electricity, mathematics, wiring, and connections; read and interpret diagrams and schematics; and adapt to rapidly changing technology and job conditions.
• Must have the ability to learn related computer applications.
• Must have the ability to use meter testing equipment.
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
• Ability to utilize common sense to deal with problems involving several known variables of a routine nature.
• Ability to set priorities.
• Works independently and as a team member with diverse staff throughout the company.
• Demonstrates a positive attitude, good work ethic, courteous at all times, and ability to remain calm under pressure.
• Willing to assist others as required.
• Be a safe worker.
• Any candidate granted this position is expected to work towards and prove they are ready for the next step, AMI Meter Technician II, within a finite amount of time. The timetable is flexible and will be determined by an evaluation with their supervisor(s).

QUALIFICATIONS:

• Minimum of two years experience working on self-contained electric meters.
• Successful coursework in mathematics and science.
• High school graduate or high school equivalency (GED or HiSET).
• AMI experience preferred.
• Valid Massachusetts Driver's License.
