The Board of Directors of Eastern Maine Electric Cooperative (EMEC) invites applications for the position of CEO. The Board has engaged Holmes Executive Search LLC to facilitate the search process.

EMEC is a financially sound and operationally strong electric distribution cooperative headquartered in Calais, ME.  EMEC employs 35 extremely dedicated team members. EMEC serves 13,000 residential, seasonal, and businesses in Eastern Maine. EMEC has 62% residential, 20% seasonal, and 18% commercial loads with revenue of $20 million annually.

The current CEO is retiring with thirty-one plus years of service, over 18 years as the CEO.

The CEO is responsible for the overall management of EMEC and reports directly to the 11-member Board of Directors.

Candidate requirements, although not all inclusive:

  • A high level of senior management experience in the electric utility industry or related field.
  • Understand the cooperative principles, governance, policies, bylaws, and the CEO/Board relationship.
  • Communicate effectively with the membership, other stakeholders, as well as with team members.
  • Demonstrate team building skills and conduct self with the highest levels of ethics and integrity.
  • Ability to lead all the strategic initiatives and functions required of an electric distribution cooperative.
  • A firm grasp of the electric utility industries’ evolving legislative and regulatory challenges.
  • Excellent people skills and ability to represent the cooperative well in the community.

Location:

The Co-op is headquartered in Calais, which has a population of just over 3,000.  Nestled on Maine’s easternmost border, Calais offers the perfect blend of history, hospitality, outdoor adventure, and pristine natural beauty.  There are endless opportunities for hiking, biking, ATV trails, lakes, salt water, boating, fishing, and hunting.  Bar Harbor (Acadia National Park) is only two hours away.  The area is a hidden gem that is beginning to be discovered by homeowners and tourists.  Minutes after leaving the office, you can be on the water, on a trail, or simply enjoying the peace that comes with truly open space.  While rural, the Calais area has broadband service and has two national hardware stores, a national farm store, a national drug/grocery store, two additional grocery stores, a building supply store, and a community college.
