Ashburnham Municipal Light Plant (AMLP) is seeking applicants for the position of Lineworker. This position may be filled at the Apprentice, 3rd Class, 2nd Class, or 1st Class level depending on experience and qualifications.
Summary of Duties:
This position is structured as a progressive Lineworker classification (Apprentice through 1st Class). All hires are expected to advance to 1st Class Lineworker upon successfully completing the required training, experience, and educational requirements. Accordingly, the knowledge, skills, and abilities outlined below reflect the scope of duties expected of a 1st Class Lineworker. Proficiency expectations will increase progressively based on classification level and years of service.
Candidates must demonstrate the technical competence necessary to perform assigned duties safely and efficiently. Strong communication skills are required, along with the ability to effectively troubleshoot and determine the cause of system issues. Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
- Construct, install, maintain, and repair overhead and underground electric distribution systems up to 13,800 volts
- Work on energized and de-energized conductors (primary and secondary)
- Set, frame, guy, and replace poles; string and sag conductors
- Install transformers, perform connections, grounding, and related equipment mounting
- Perform switching, tagging, and isolation procedures
- Respond to outages, emergencies, and routine service calls; troubleshoot system faults
- Install and maintain street lighting
- Perform line clearance/tree trimming
- Monitor, track, and report usage of materials and inventory
- Locate and mark underground utilities in compliance with Dig Safe requirements
- Comply with all applicable AMLP & APPA safety regulations and OSHA standards; maintain required training and certifications
- Safely operate and maintain departmental equipment, including digger derricks, bucket trucks, and related fleet vehicles
- Climb wood poles and work at heights
- Maintain line trucks, equipment, garages, substations, and yard facilities
- Participate in rotating standby/on-call schedule and respond to after-hours call-outs
- Assist with snow removal and other departmental support activities
- Work extended hours during outages and emergency utility conditions
- Respond professionally to customer inquiries and perform other related duties as directed by the Working Foreman or designee
Minimum Qualifications:
Physical Requirements:
- Regularly lifts/moves objects weighing up to 50 pounds, and occasionally move/lifts objects up to 100 pounds.
- Frequently spends long periods walking, standing, climbing, balancing, kneeling, twisting, crouching, reaching, driving, etc. Frequently works on equipment at or above shoulder height.
Skills:
- Must have solid communications skills and strong critical and analytical thinking skills.
- Must read, write, and speak English fluently, be able to interpret blueprints, schematics and other technical and construction documents.
- Must possess appropriate mathematical skills including the ability to calculate percentages, weights, lengths, distances, voltages, currents, etc. as needed.
- Must be able to work under pressure and contribute to a positive working environment.
Education: High school diploma or equivalent required.
Experience: Classification and experience requirements vary by level (Apprentice through 1st Class Lineworker). Candidates must demonstrate progressively responsible linework experience appropriate to the level. Completion of a recognized apprenticeship program and experience is required for 1st Class qualification. Must provide proof of educational training hours and practical work experience.
Licenses/Certificates: Possess or ability to obtain Massachusetts Class A Commercial Driver’s License with no restrictions. A Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer License with minimum 1B certification within one year of hire is required. All must be maintained as a condition of employment.
To ensure timely emergency response, applicants must live within a 30-minute commute of the Ashburnham Municipal Light Plant.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 7:00am-3:00pm, with scheduled on-call weeks and occasional outages, emergencies, and extended hours.
Salary Range: This position is covered by a collective bargaining agreement. Job classification will be determined upon hiring.
