Position summary:

GML is seeking a Utility Line Clearance Tree Trimmer / Groundman to safely and effectively clear vegetation along energized electric utility lines for various municipalities across the region. The ideal candidate will have experience in tree trimming, vegetation management, and working near electrical infrastructure. This role requires adherence to safety procedures and the ability to work in various weather conditions.

Duties:

• Trim, prune, and remove trees and vegetation near energized power lines following industry safety standards.
• Operate chainsaws, pole saws, pruners, chippers, and other trimming equipment.
• Maintain a bucket truck, chipper and all department equipment issued to a level deemed satisfactory by a supervisor. Ensure trucks are properly cleaned and ready for operation.
• Perform ground clearing and debris removal.
• Climb trees using ropes, harnesses, and aerial lifts as necessary.
• Identify and assess tree hazards that may interfere with electrical infrastructure.
• Follow OSHA and APPA safety protocols, including proper use of PPE.
• Work closely with lineworkers and vegetation management teams to coordinate clearance efforts.
• Maintain and inspect equipment daily to ensure operational safety.
• Respond to emergency storm restoration work when needed.
• Set up and breakdown of roadside work zones.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Strong reading and math skills, mechanical aptitude and ability to work safely with others.
• Proficiency in using personal protective equipment (PPE) required for working near high-voltage distribution systems (e.g., rubber gloves, hard hat, safety glasses, FR clothing).
• Valid Class D Massachusetts driving license or equivalent.
• Must have the ability to perform moderately heavy physical work. Also work outdoors in all seasons, and at times for extended periods.
• Must be a high school graduate or equivalent.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3-5 years experience tree trimming for electric utilities
• Valid Class A or B Massachusetts driving license or equivalent
• Valid Massachusetts 2A/1B/1C license
• Valid OSHA 10 Certificate
• Valid TCIA EHAP Certificate
• ISA Certified Tree worker credentials
• First Aid/CPR/ Basic Life support Certification
