SUMMARY
The Journeyperson Lineperson, under the direct supervision of the Electric Operations General Foreman, is knowledgeable and performs any work expected of a fully qualified line mechanic. The Journeyperson Lineperson directs crew(s) in the absence of a Leader Lineperson. The Journeyperson Lineperson is experienced in maintaining, operating and constructing all overhead and underground distribution and transmission circuits. The Journeyperson Lineperson promotes good harmony and communications among all employees and the general public.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Performs work according to applicable Federal and State safety regulations as well as Groton Utilities Safety Manual.
2. Installs any and all overhead conductors and facilities.
3. Installs underground conductors, devices and equipment.
4. Prepares work site and sets up related equipment for the assigned job.
5. Installs all transformer connections.
6. Installs pole mounted primary metering.
7. Troubleshoots outages and customer complaints.
8. Cuts and removes trees.
9. Trains lower classification employees.
10. Safely operates all equipment and vehicles.
11. Excels at rigging.
12. Performs all duties of lower classifications and other duties as may be assigned by the Electric Operations General Foreman.
QUALIFICATIONS
Must be physically fit and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory.
Must have excellent communication skills when dealing with employees and the general public.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must possess and maintain as a condition of employment, a valid driver’s license Class A and safely operate City of Groton vehicles.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or equivalent required and be knowledgeable in electrical theory and have mechanical abilities.
Must have successfully passed an approved apprenticeship lineperson course. Must have a minimum of four (4) years lineperson experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to respond in a timely manner to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
Must be able to speak, understand and comprehend the English language.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Ability to work with mathematical concepts
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations
Must be able to read and interpret drawings, specifications, wiring diagrams and schematics.
Ability to effectively present information to management
Must possess and demonstrate mechanical aptitude
REASONING ABILITY
Ability to understand basic electrical concepts
Ability to solve transformer related problems.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and/or hear. The employee must be able to carry and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to climb poles, trees, steel structures, ladders at elevated heights and operate aerial personnel lifts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The aforesaid vision requirements can be satisfied with appropriate medically prescribed prescription glasses/lenses when applicable.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to high voltage hazards and extreme weather conditions as well as construction sites. The employee at times may be asked to report to work after hours for emergencies, trouble calls and power restoration.
