Intro to Electrical Hazards & Safety 2023

Based on member demand, NEPPA is pleased to be offering a brand-new Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training course being held May 23 – 25, 2023 at the NEPPA Training Center (200 New Estate Road, Littleton, MA 01460).

Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training is designed for new hires in the electric and telecommunications industries. Participants may elect to attend one and/or two-days of the program.

Topics covered in this program meet the introductory standards required to enter these industries. Over the course of their employment, participants will require further training for each work duty and responsibility.

NOTE: In addition to the topics covered in this program, each employer is responsible for the site-specific training of any new hire or employee. See Employer Responsibilities below.

Upon successful completion of the Program, students are awarded a Certificate of Completion.

Who Should Attend

Basic Electricity & Mathematics is designed for:

>Any New Hire in Electric or Telecommunications Industries
>
New Lineworkers
>New or Existing Telecommunications Technicians
>New Substation or Meter Technicians
>New Operations Personnel
>New Office Personnel (Days 1)

Testing & Demonstrations

Final Exam (25 Questions)

All participants are required to demonstrate and perform a pole top, bucket and enclosed/confined space rescue.
NOTE: Only individuals qualified to climb will perform a pole top rescue.

 

Employer Responsibilities

While this program provides awareness and general safety training required for and to begin employment, the employer is still responsible for providing tool, equipment, and site-specific training for each employee.

Employer-specific training includes but is not limited to:

>Site-specific Safety Data Sheets
>Written emergency action plans
>Tool-specific training
>Use of job-specific PPE including harnesses
>Utility-specific bucket trucks and/or rescue equipment, etc.

NOTE: Only qualified employees may work on or with exposed energized lines or parts of equipment.

    • NOTE: Only qualified employees may work on or with exposed energized lines or parts of equipment.
    • Recognition of electrical hazards
    • Skills & Techniques to control or avoid hazards
    • Minimum Approach Distances and corresponding voltages
    • Skills & Techniques to distinguish exposed live parts from other parts of electric equipment

Course Prerequisites

There is no prerequisite for Introduction to Electrical Hazards & Safety Training however only individuals qualified to climb will perform a pole top rescue.

This is a basic, foundational course for NEPPA’s technical training programs.

Registration Fees

Registration fees include lunch on Days 1 & 2. If you have any dietary or other restrictions, please note them on your registration.

Cancellations

Cancellations are accepted until Wednesday, May 9, 2023 (or two weeks prior to the start of the class). Substitutions may be made at any time prior to the start of the class.

Dan Flynn

Certified Medic First Aid Trainer for First Aid, CPR, AED

Dan Flynn has been a safety trainer with Northeast Public Power Association, since September 2018 after retiring from Wakefield Municipal Gas and Light Dept with more than a 40-year career in public power.

Dan started in the electric meter department in the 1970’s and worked his way through the electric line department as a lineman/line foremen and his last position as the electric department superintendent. Some of Dan’s responsibilities covered construction, maintenance, and safety of the electric line division. Dan continues to maintain his 1B/2A Mass. hoisting license and a Mass. Class A Driving license.

Dan lives with his wife Alayne of 39 years and they have two adult children and one grandchild.

He says, “It is a privilege to continue to be involved with the public power industry in New England to give back any knowledge I’ve acquired over these many years.”
