SUMMARY
The Apprentice Lineperson, under the direct supervision of Electric Operations General Foreman, installs, maintains and repairs electrical power distribution equipment. Applies knowledge of electrical theory and principles in determining equipment malfunctions and applies skills in assisting restoration equipment to operation. Promotes good harmony and communication with individuals. Assists higher classification of linepersons in the performance of their duties.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Apprentice 1
1. Performs work according to applicable Federal and State safety regulations as well as Groton Utilities Safety Manual.
2. Works on secondary voltages up to 600 volts with direct supervision.
3. Climbs poles, towers, ladders, trees, structures, building, etc.
4. Learns rope knot tying, splicing and equipment.
5. Stocks and cleans vehicles and equipment.
6. Learns proper operations of vehicles and equipment.
7. Follows instructions of higher classified employees.
8. Assists in the framing and installation of poles and anchors according to Department standards.

Apprentice 2
9. Learns all secondary connections for single phase and three phase overhead transformers and pad mount transformers.
10. Works on and troubleshoots secondary voltages up to 600V without direct supervision.
11. Performs simple primary work with direct supervision.

Apprentice 3
12. Learns the primary connection for single phase and three-phase overhead transformers, pad mount transformers, capacitors and voltage regulators.
13. Must have in-depth knowledge of the distribution system.
14. Cleans, paints and lubricates equipment and vehicles.
15. Operates voltmeters, Ampmeters, rotation meters and meter test equipment.
16. Rings out meter boxes and installs single-phase meters.
17. Operates hydraulic and power equipment.
18. Assembles equipment for proper operation.
19. Performs basic rigging for lifting, pulling and securing material and equipment.
20. Performs simple primary work without direct supervision.

Apprentice 4
21. In-depth knowledge of all single phase, secondary and three phase transformers and primary connections.
22. Installs all underground equipment such as conductors, terminations, elbows, splices and related equipment.
23. Installs all equipment such as conductors, cross arms, transformers, poles, anchors and other related equipment.
24. Performs work according to Department standards and procedures.
25. Performs work without direct supervision.
26. Assists in the restoration of power outages.
27. Learns the duties of a Journeyman Lineperson.
28. Performs all other duties as may be assigned by the Electric Operations General Foreman

QUALIFICATIONS
Must be physically fit and be able to perform each essential duty satisfactory.
Must have excellent communication skills when dealing with employees and the general public.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must maintain and possess as a condition of employment, a valid driver’s license Class A. If individual does not have a Class A license upon hire, it must be attained prior to the completion of the probation period before progressing to the next step. Must safely operate City of Groton vehicles.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
High school graduate or equivalent required with a basic knowledge of electrical theory and mechanical abilities.
Must successfully complete as a condition of employment an approved apprentice lineperson course provided by the City of Groton.

LANGUAGE SKILLS
Ability to respond in a timely manner to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community.
Must be able to speak, understand and comprehend the English language.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
Must possess and demonstrate mechanical aptitude.
Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
Must be able to read and interpret plans, drawings, specifications, wiring diagrams and schematics.
Ability to effectively present information to management.

REASONING ABILITY
Ability to understand basic electricity concepts.
Ability to solve transformer related problems.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; walk; use hands to finger; handle or operate objects, tools or controls; and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, talk and/or hear. The employee must be able to carry and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds. Must be able to climb poles, trees, steel structures, ladders at elevated heights and operate aerial personnel lifts. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. The aforesaid vision requirements can be satisfied with appropriate medically prescribed prescription glasses/lenses when applicable.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. The employee may be exposed to high voltage hazards and extreme weather conditions as well as construction sites. The employee at times may be asked to report to work after hours for emergencies, trouble calls and power restoration.
