The Position:
Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Senior Engineer will primarily support the installation and operation of electrical transmission and distribution lines, substations, protective devices, and equipment to ensure well-designed, cost-effective service to our members. The Senior Engineer will also assist the Engineering department in studying the electric system for reliability improvements. The Senior Engineer will assist in the development and maintenance of the Geographic Information System (GIS) and map/drafting products to ensure a current as-built model of NHEC’s electrical system as necessary for accurate system analysis, assist in the coordination and development of the long- and short-range work plans and monitor the system and assist with the performance of short- and long-range analysis.
Job Responsibilities:
- Assists in the installation of electrical distribution lines, substations, and equipment to ensure quality and reliability of service to the members at the most economical, environmentally acceptable manner.
- Determines future needs of NHEC’s electrical system by periodically performing system and circuit analysis including load flow, voltage drop, flicker, short circuit, and motor start analysis.
- Develops recloser, and fuse applications along with the calculation of all related settings.
- Assures an accurate and current electrical system model is available for distribution analysis by assisting in the development and maintenance of NHEC’s GIS & mapping system.
- Assists Construction and Operations Groups by providing technical support when needed.
- Renders service assistance, and advice to NHEC members concerning their electric service; review their plans for additions and other changes to provide adequate and economical facilities; consult with them concerning service problems and resolve member complaints amicably and to maintain and promote an attitude of helpfulness and cooperation.
- Ensures NHEC maintains uniform construction standards and procedures by supervising the update of new assembly drawings, modifications to the computerized construction and work order systems, changes to line design manuals and the dispersal of updates/changes to the necessary personnel.
- Assists in the coordination and development of the long- and short-range work plans.
- Assures proper operation of NHEC’s electrical system and determines future needs by monitoring all critical parameters, i.e., monthly substation and metering point data, monthly outage statistics, protection device operation etc.
- Improves distribution system reliability and maintainability by analyzing typical line design problems and providing guidelines and standards for uniformity in construction.
- Assists the Engineering Department with staying current and controlling cost by working with the Departments O&M and Capital budgets.
- Supports the cultural goals of NHEC by exhibiting self-leadership, developing, and maintaining effective working relationships, being results oriented, being innovative, and seeking feedback.
- Increases professional and technical knowledge by attending educational classes, reading professional magazines, staying current with all relevant codes, and participating in professional societies.
- Develops bid document specifications for equipment purchase and contractor labor.
- Prepares DER impact studies and interconnection requirements.
- Assumes the responsibilities of the Engineering Manager when requested.
- Performs other duties as directed or required.
THE PERSON:
Technical Knowledge/Skill:
- Proficient with MS Office Suite especially Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Exceptional analytical skills and an aptitude for detailed engineering.
- Ability to work in an environment that often requires the performance of multiple simultaneous activities, where deadlines need to be met.
- Ability to learn job-specific computer applications. Experience with Milsoft Windmil and CYMTCC software desirable.
- Must be able to work with the engineering staff in the designing of outside plant facilities required for the efficient operation of the electrical transmission and distribution system.
- Must be able to meet with NHEC members and/or their engineers to solve problems and/or discuss their plans for additions or new facilities.
- Must have thorough knowledge in electric circuit theory and all calculations.
- Must have a working knowledge of the NESC, and standards for electric service and standard utility specifications, construction materials and practices.
- Must be familiar with project management skills.
- Must be able to recognize system needs and to meet its electrical and mechanical demands to satisfy aesthetic, economic and environmental requirements.
- Must be familiar with protection concepts, coordination analysis and device settings.
- Must be familiar with requirements to interconnect distributed resources.
- Experience with Milsoft Windmil and CYMTCC software desirable.
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field is required, a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering is preferred.
Additional specialized training in electric utility operations and construction desirable.
A Professional Engineer’s license in the State of NH is desirable.
Experience:
Five years of progressively responsible electric utility engineering, preferably in a rural electric system, including supervisory responsibility is preferred. This experience should include the design of underground and overhead distribution lines, distribution substations, protection systems and all applicable facilities. Should have experience in organizing and supervising work groups in coordinating and implementing plans and designs.
Experience in monitoring and controlling the cost of assigned major projects by coordinating the planning and preparation of line construction contracts including invitations to bid, evaluation of qualified bidders, labor and material cost analysis, preparation of construction specifications and procedures, and final inspection is desirable.
Working Conditions:
This position is eligible for a hybrid work environment dependent upon management approval and workload requirements. Some field trips within the Cooperative's service area will be required for line inspection and data acquisition, in varying weather conditions. Occasional overtime may be expected. Attendance at periodic technical seminars, conferences and civic and professional meetings can be expected.
Assistance with power restoration efforts is required of all employees. It may be required outside regular business hours that employees will be assigned functions to support power restoration. All employees are required to provide a personal phone number where they may be reached after hours. This number will only be used for internal purpose. A valid motor vehicle operator's license is required.

COMPENSATION:
NHEC views compensation in a holistic and transparent manner. The salary range for this role is targeted at $130,000-$150,000.
