Conflict can arise in any workplace due to misunderstandings, stress, or personal differences. De-escalation techniques help prevent conflicts from escalating into violence or unsafe situations. This safety corner will focus on strategies to handle conflicts calmly and professionally. De-escalation matters because it reduces the risk of physical or verbal violence, helps maintain a positive and safe work environment, enhances communication and teamwork, and promotes professional conflict resolution.

Two Types of Workplace Stress

Instead of thinking of stress as the traditional two types of stress, categorize it as unnecessary or motivating. How much of the stress you are dealing with at work is superfluous? How can it be eliminated? Are you a source of unnecessary stress for someone else at work? Eliminate unnecessary stress and e mbr ace motivating stress to become a more efficient and safer worker.

Hierarchy of Hazard Controls

Elimination is the most effective hazard control method as the hazard is physically removed from the workplace. Eliminating tasks performed in high areas would eliminate falls, for instance, while performing linework if feasible de-energize the line test and ground this will remove the hazard and the employees can perform the task in a controlled manner. While effective, eliminating hazards is not always possible. Many pieces of electrical equipment carry the risk of arc flash. If so, the other types of control measures on the hierarchy offer solutions.

S.O.R.T For a Safer Working Environment

The acronym S.O.R.T. is a tool that can help remind us to take steps to address hazards and create a safe work environment. S.O.R.T
stands for Stop, Observe, Recognize, and Take Ownership. Taking ownership means more than just communicating the hazard to the other people in the work area. Stop work if necessary and get the right people involved to address the hazard correctly.
