Description

Reporting to the Superintendent, the Substation Operators’ primary responsibility is to monitor the transmission circuits from Eversource and the distribution circuits that the MLP uses to supply electricity to its customers. The incumbent must interface properly with the computer-based SCADA system and monitor system conditions and become efficient in recognizing distribution and substation problems to notify proper authorities when system problems develop.

Principal activities include: monitoring loads on transmission lines and distribution circuits in the MLP owned substations and assess problems on those circuits; responsible for opening and closing of power circuits in the substations or switching locations;  interfaces with SCADA to monitor the various substations in the electric distribution system; works as a system dispatcher monitoring all MLP communications;  performs routine maintenance work in substations to keep the equipment, high and low voltage breakers and switchgear, emergency generators, station batteries and chargers free of dust and dirt; obtains all pertinent information from Lineworker’s after completion of call-in work and fills out outage reports; participates in technical training to increase his or her level of understanding of electricity, substation equipment, distribution system, SCADA equipment and power restoration methods; possesses thorough knowledge of the MLP employee rescue (“Code Blue”) procedures; monitors and assists in the operation of high voltage test equipment with supervisors. assists in testing of newly installed cables, repaired cables or in locating underground cable faults; limits access to Station 41 to authorized personnel only; monitors the Dig Safe system for the MLP; must be available for standby duty at specified times, and in cases of emergency may be called in at any time. 

Requirements:  Familiarity with substation equipment and operations.  Progressively increasing knowledge of applicable National Electrical Safety Code and National Electric Code sections pertaining to electric utility work. Progressively increasing knowledge of OSHA 1910.269 requirements. High School degree or other equivalent. Possession and maintenance of a valid Massachusetts Commercial Driver’s License.
